The Stables and The Roost are luxury, dog friendly holiday cottages which are nestled in the beautiful North Yorkshire countryside between the edge of the North York Moors and the Howardian Hills, an area of outstanding natural beauty. Situated on the edge of the village of Oswaldkirk, just 4 miles outside the pretty market town of Helmsley and under an hour away from the diverse North Yorkshire coastline or the historic city of York. Adjoining our family home where we keep Dexter cows, Ryeland sheep and a collection of hens, The Stables cottage sleeps up to five people, can accommodate numerous well behaved dogs and has an open plan living area. The Roost sleeps two people and two dogs. Both have access to the enclosed rear garden and campfire shelter ideal for marshmallow toasting! The cottages can be booked together at a 20% discount, for those who want to holiday with friends and family but still have their own space to spend time alone in! For 2024 we will not be letting the cottages to two separate booking parties for the same time period, meaning you will have sole use of the facilities here. We are on the Ebor Way long distance walk – perfect for a local wander or a bigger challenge, with many woodland and Moors walks just a few minutes drive away. If it’s a wet weather day, you can spend time in the games room playing pool, family board games or quietly completing a jigsaw.
Whether you’re looking for a remote relaxing get away, dark skies gazing, some time with family, friends and pets, or a fun packed holiday exploring all of the wonders of North Yorkshire, The Stables or The Roost are the perfect place to do it!

5/5 A very relaxing stay at The Roost in extremely pleasant and relaxing surroundings. The Roost is very well equipped, Lisa and Jason have thought of and provided everything.
The Roost is idyllic and we enjoyed a very relaxing and enjoyable stay.
Tips for other travellers
The Roost is in the prefect location to explore the Yorkshire Moors. We enjoyed visits to Whitby, Robin Hood Bay, Ampleforth Abbey (which is literally on the doorstep) and to York.
5/5 Absolutely fabulous time at The Stables, wonderful secure garden for the dogs and super comfy beds. We had lovely weather and really enjoyed relaxing in the garden early evening. Lisa really accommodating.

5/5 This was our 4th stay at the Stables & found the high standards of the property maintained. The Welcome pack is always much appreciated if you’ve travelled some distance to get there. The property was clean, warm, cosy & well-equipped. Dog friendly property with a safe enclosed huge garden at rear that our young westie absolutely loved to run free, chase a ball & do zoomies. Plenty to do & see in the area. Strongly recommend it. The owners Lisa and Jason are very friendly & helpful if you have a query or problem.
Tips for other travellers
Pickering for steam trains, best fish & chips ever at Whitby. York for the Railway museum which is free, the cathedral & shopping. Plenty of walks for you & your dogs. Helmsley a beautiful village with independent shops & wild bird sanctuary. Thirsk an old market town with James Herriot museum. NT properties always great to go to. ie. Nunnington Hall. Found a new pub for Sunday Roast dinners at lunchtime cled the Carpenter’s Arms at Felixkirk about 2 miles before reaching Thirsk off main road. It’s very busy but dog friendly, you need to book in advance as very popular.
5/5 What a great find. No wonder so many guests keep coming back year on year. This place has it all: location (easy access to York but far enough away that you can enjoy the peace and quiet of the beautiful surroundings), quality indoors and out (everything you need for a great stay, lovely welcome pack, brilliant outdoor space for the dogs), lovely hosts ( we only met Lisa but were made to feel welcome and relaxed), comfort (from lounge to kitchen and bedrooms. Lovely and warm and everything you need).
We will def return.
